CIPEL, International Commission for the Protection of Lake Geneva

Over the years, the CIPEL’s recommendations have led to various actions that have improved significantly the quality of the lake’s water and of its catchment area.

A few examples:

- From the sixties onwards, the construction of waste water treatment plants (WWTP), connection of the population to the sewerage system and the installation of waste treatment systems.

- The improvement of the waste water collection systems by elimination of parasitic clear water (separate networks).

- The introduction of dephosphatisation in all the WWTPs in the Lake Geneva catchment area.

- The monitoring of the efficiency of waste water treatment plants.

- The banning of phosphates in washing detergents in 1986 in Switzerland and in 2007 in France.

- The optimisation of fertilisers used in agriculture and the promotion of cultivation methods which limit both the use of phytosanitary products and erosion.

- The elimination, treatment and reduction of metal pollution, including that which comes from incineration plants.

- The detection of the organic micropollutants in water and the awareness raising on the potential threat to health and environment.

- The emplementation of "renaturing" or restorative projects involving the tributaries and the banks of Lake Geneva.

- The prevention of accidental pollution and the coordination of prevention measures.

- The promotion of public awareness of the importance of water protection.
